The Heard Museum on Central Avenue is one of the most respected museums of American Indian art and culture in the world. Founded in 1929, it’s built around Native voices — much of what you see is presented in collaboration with the artists and communities it represents, which is what sets it apart from a typical history museum.
What to see
- HOME: Native People in the Southwest — the anchor exhibit, tracing the cultures of the region.
- Away From Home: American Indian Boarding School Stories — a powerful, unflinching look at the boarding-school era, told through survivors.
- Rotating fine-art galleries of jewelry, pottery, textiles, and contemporary Native artists.
Give yourself about two hours. The courtyards and café make good pauses between galleries.
Time it right
The Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair & Market each spring is one of the largest juried Native art markets in the country — hundreds of artists, hoop-dance performances, and food. If you can plan around it, do.
Nearby & after
The Heard sits right on the light-rail line in central Phoenix, so it’s easy to pair with lunch downtown. It’s about 20 minutes south of our North Phoenix salon — an easy detour if you’re already coming in for color or a cut. Heading to an opening or a gallery night after? Book a style earlier in the day so it lasts into the evening.
